Celia Cruz - (October 21, 1925 – July 16, 2003)
It has been 10 years since the passing of Celia Cruz, one of the most important artist in the world who with her “¡AZUCAR!” won over millions of people.
For me Celia Cruz was much more than an artist, yes, she was very talented, but that fact that she was an Afro Latina (a term that I did not have at the time) made a world of difference to me. She was a mirror in which I could see someone with my skin color, nose, hair and overall someone who resembled my grandmother and the women in my family. Her image on TV allowed me to see myself and it is where I first saw myself represented; something I really needed.
Que Dios la tenga en su santa gloria Celia.
